Casino Royale: a New James Bond for a New Age

James Bond is the greatest super-spy to ever don a tuxedo on the silver screen. He is suave, sleek, sexy, dangerous, and is the bane of evil-doer who pose a threat to the freedom of the world. The latest addition to the film franchise, Casino Royale, depicts Bond (played by Daniel Craig) as more than a simple stereotype of masculine prowess. While other films in the canon have contributed a great deal to creation of the James Bonds icon, Casino Royale has created a new model for the films to come.

Many of the same stereotypical James Bond traits still exist in the Casino Royale, however the director’s stylistic choices and redefinitions of some of those stereotypes bring freshness to a franchise that was on the brink of becoming stale. Casino Royale takes an expressionistic approach, giving the film a layer of grit and depth that was previously unseen in other Bond flick. In accordance with that style, the film portrays James Bond as a weakened and flawed character, trying to cope with the harsh realities of being a super-spy.
